The Best Heating and Cooling Options for Your Sunroom
Everyone loves sunrooms.
They are a great place to kick back and relax, soak in the sun, and bring the outdoors inside your Pacific Northwest home.
Sunrooms are perfect home sanctuaries in spring and fall, but they can become too hot for comfort in the summer and often too chilly in the winter.
There is a way to use your sunroom whenever you want, regardless of the outdoor temperature.
The solution? A ductless mini split.

Why is a ductless mini split the best option for enhancing year-round comfort in your sunroom?
- You do not have to extend ductwork from your ducted system. A mini split consists of an outdoor condenser and compressor unit that connects to an indoor air handling unit with refrigerant tubing and a power cable.
The indoor unit houses an evaporator coil and fan that blows the conditioned air into the room. A reversing valve changes the flow of the refrigerant.
While moving in one direction, it removes heat from your home and expels it outdoors. In the other direction, it extracts heat from the outside and moves it indoors.
- Ductless mini splits are quiet and minimally invasive. The tubing and power cord connect to the air handler through a small hole in the wall. By comparison, ductwork is bulky, needs more space, and can require extensive construction through walls or floors.
- With no ductwork to collect and circulate dust and dirt throughout your home, a mini split can help improve indoor air quality (IAQ).
- Ductless mini splits are highly efficient. Bryant’s top-of-the-line Evolution® Series 38MPRA has a 42 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). SEER rates cooling efficiency.
The higher the number, the more efficient the unit. In heating mode, it can keep you warm and cozy even when the outdoor temperature drops below 0° Fahrenheit.

Ductless Mini Split Tax Breaks
One of the most notable benefits of buying a ductless mini split is the federal tax break available to help ease the installation costs. You can get a 30 percent tax credit up to $2,000 through 2032 for installing a ductless mini split.
Two other federal funding sources, the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) and Whole Home Energy Rebates (HOMES) offer rebates on electric appliances, heat pumps, ductless mini splits, insulation, ventilation, air sealing, and more.
The HEAR program rebates are aimed at low—and middle-income homeowners. The HOMES rebates are available to all income levels for home improvement projects that reduce home energy use by 20 percent.
Individual states are administering the federal rebate funds. You can track their progress at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Other Heating and Cooling Options for Your Sunroom
Not ready to invest in a mini split? Here are some alternatives to consider:
- Install a Ceiling Fan: A ceiling fan can support your ductless mini split by distributing hot or cool air throughout your sunroom. While running clockwise, it pushes warm air downward into your living space. Reverse its direction in the summer to move cool air throughout the room.
- Electric Baseboard Heating: Although it is not as efficient as a mini slit, it is an option for a sunroom. It is available as a portable unit or can be wired into your electrical system.
- Feel the Flames: A gas fireplace or Franklin stove can warm your room and its ambiance.
- Radiant Floor Heat: If you are planning a remodel that includes the flooring in your sunroom, consider radiant floor heat. Electric cables or heating mats are sandwiched between the floor and floor covering and provide heat that keeps you warm and cozy.
